Physical activity is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Getting enough exercise into your day can seem an impossible task. We all have work and family responsibilities that take a tremendous amount of time. Which leaves little left for us.

Instead of making huge goals that you are unlikely to meet. Try starting with making better choices. Each day get more active: take the stairs, walk the dog, walk to your co-workers office to ask a question instead of e-mailing them, etc. These little changes will soon add up.

Try wearing a pedometer and increasing the number of steps you take in a day. The experts say that we should be taking 10,000 steps a day. Find ways to increase the number of steps you take every day: park a block or two away or park at the back of the parking lot at the shopping mall.

Walking is a great exercise. Walk at your own pace and take the time to relax and enjoy your surroundings. Many towns and cities have great walking trails. If you take your dog, just be sure to keep them on leash. Walking regularily for just 1/2 an hour a day has been shown to drastically reduce your chances of suffering from Heart Disease and Cancer. It is also a great way to get more Vitamin "N" - Nature!

Ready for the next Step?

Try a fitness class. There are lots out there. Start with aquatics-based classes as they are non-weigh bearing and terrific if you are worried about knees or ankles. Try something fun like Zumba, or calming like Yoga or Tai Chi. How about getting in touch with your inner feminine and try a Belly Dance class. Yes, men also belly dance.

Find a YMCA, they are available in many communities and offer an amazing value for the money. If you are ready to make a full committment to your fitness I highly recommend a well run Military Style Boot Camp like Soldiers of Fitness.

Who knows ... before you know it, I may be seeing you at my next Trail Run.
